Cancer Doesn’t Care

photo-46

Birmingham radio personality, Sly King

Sylvester (Sly) King is a radio personality in Birmingham, AL. Sly has never been directly affected by a blood cancer disease neither has anyone in his family, yet he has been inspired to fight against blood cancers by raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

When I first read he was a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2013 Man of the Year I was like, “I have gotta feature this on my site.” As many of you know, I loss my father to Leukemia 14 years ago this month. Like Sly, I know cancer doesn’t care about race, gender, age, finances or religious affiliation. Although cancer doesn’t care, I do and so does Sly.

About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps blood cancer patients live better, longer lives.

Statistics show that “approximately every 4 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer disease” and “approximately every 10 minutes someone in the U.S. dies from a blood cancer.” That person could be King, his wife, his 3-year old daughter, or it could be you. He has chosen to be proactive. Before this life-altering disease affects the live of someone he knows and loves, he has chosen to join forces with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise funds to ensure continued research, Approximately every 4 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer.provide financial assistance to those in need, and deposit back into the lives of those young and old who deserve the best care available. Cancer does not care, but King does. Be proactive and join him in this fight.

A Father’s JULE… Happy Father’s Day 2012

I AM MY FATHER’S JULi

When I imagine father’s of course I imagine my own. Though he left this earth 14 years ago, he buried so many golden nuggets in the treasure chest of my heart. Funny how you don’t recognize a jewel is a jewel because that’s all you know… that is until the person giving them to you isn’t there anymore and you realize that you are holding jewels just not the bearer of them anymore.

My father gave me so many jewels even while he battled Leukemia in his last days, he still garnered up the energy to give me one last jewel… *yes, insert a face full of tears here*

WHEW… So on this Father’s Day I salute father’s. I love my father so much. If your father is still on this earth, despite your disdain for him, his absence or whatever, don’t let a day come in the future where you live to regret not giving him a chance even if he never gave you one. TOUGH, huh? I know, but I’m so sincere… Don’t hold off ever telling anyone in your life that you love them, because tomorrow is simply “A Pending Transaction.”

Here are 3 very beautiful stories about fathers from 3 friends. A Fathers Day Tribute

So here’s what I need you to do… Please make a donation to help this young lady get to Denver and then ask your friends to do so as well. My goal is to see her have that $1800 by the time North Carolina takes to the court on Sunday night (Yea I’m a Tarheel).

As the first women’s basketball player from FAMU to be selected to participate in this event, with your help she will be able to represent the RATTLER NATION and bring exposure to HBCU women’s basketball programs.

Her mother, Iris Hinson has created a PayPal account to help get her babygirl to Denver…. We hope you will send a donation.

21 Days! God Body Diet

I’ve lost 10 lbs so far and I feel great. I no longer look bloated all the time or as if I may be a few months pregnant. I have enjoyed the GBD so much so, that after my 30th day, I will continue to practice it. I will make a few modifications, but for the most part, I’ll be sticking with the plan. I love the way I feel and look. My skin isn’t as dry as it usually gets in the summertime, and my energy level has soared!

Approaching The God Body Diet Like A New Mate

7/4/10 Before GBD: At first glance, this is a cute picture. But those rolls... Not cute at all!

When I first began this diet, I realized that it and I would have to be like a couple in order for it to be successful. Similar to a new mate, the diet is gets a lot of my attention. I plan and coordinate my day in consideration of it. Just like when in a relationship you have to be considerate of your mate and their expectations, the same is true for this diet.

Today I didn’t prepare my meals before work as I usually do and it was almost a disaster. I almost decided to skip breakfast which would of course led to major afternoon cravings of some fatty low in nutrients high in carbs lunch. However, I caught myself and I considered what all I would be sacraficing if I made that mistake. A few minutes of pleasure (ie. a loaded hamburger and fries) would have led to feelings of guilt and deceit.

Similar to a new relationship, you curve your social life. It doesn’t cease to exist, but you have to make sure that those in your social circle know and respect that you can’t “flirt” with alcohol nor fried and processed foods. You’ll find yourself cutting evenings short because “you’re taken.”

If you make a date with your mate you wouldn’t call it off at the last minute because you “just don’t feel like going”, or some other lame excuse. Or maybe YOU would!  I would not. Instead, I’d be considerate and go for their sake. So when you schedule 7pm cardio while on this diet, you can’t just call off because you don’t feel like it. Get your butt out there and get to pumping or running!!

To those of you considering delving into this please consider that this diet will be like that new lover. The same way you have a glow about you when you’re in a state of bliss because of that new or special person in your life, you’ll glow because of the diet.

The God Body Diet  changes you. Not just physically, but mentally and spiritually. I hope that you’ll give it a try!

Week 2: Flushed Out

Sliced Nectarines made this salad a perfect summer lunch!

I entered week two of my Goddess Body Diet journey this week. I’ve seen some amazing changes in my body. My energy level has increased. My patience has improved and my concentration has too.

Socializing with friends has become a task. I now eat before I leave home and sometimes I even pack a snack. That snack is ordinarily fruit or animal crackers. Be sure to click on the link for the photo’s after reading the update!! Click Here For More GodDESS Body Progress
