Spring Break Gone Wrong

Spring Break Gone Wrong

Only one week into “Spring Break 2010″ and Daytona Beach, FL officials are already reporting six rapes. Daytona Beach is one of the busiest Spring Break destinations amongst college students.

March is the high season for Spring Break tourist in Daytona. Daytona Beach Police say that forty-one sexual assaults were reported last year .

During my Black College Beach Week days long ago, I always stayed with people I KNEW, not someone I met while I was there. Its not a typical vacation. When alcohol is mixed with the sun and a bit of hunger and dyhydration, your focus isn’t as good as it should be. Therfore, stay alert. Spring Break should be memorable, so be sure to make good decisions so the memory is a good one.

Florida Girl Power!

Florida Girl Power!

Every Socialite should have a some sense when it comes to POLITICS! Southern Socialites definitely should have a political awareness. Often you’ll hear people say “Politics & Religion are two things that should never be discussed, because they create too many arguments.” I totally disagree. Its because they aren’t discussed enough that people argue about them. First of all these are two of the most important “FREEDOMS & RIGHTS” we have.

So what is Florida Girl Power? Florida’s current State Supreme Court Chief Justice is, Peggy Quince. She is the first African American woman to serve in this role. She was appointed to this position in 2008 by Governor Charlie Crist.  An alum of Howard University and a member of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC., I can’t resist featuring my soror, and one of my living SHERO’s!

Florida is one of the only “Southern States” to never have had “GIRL POWER” in the Governors Mansion. However, with the highly contested governors race underway in FL that is likely to change.

Enter the state CFO of Florida, Alex Sink and State Senator Paula Dockery… These two central Florida residents are already proven leaders. Both are vowing to become the next governor of my home state. Sink is a Democratic hopeful who is favored in the polls to represent her party. Dockery, a Republican on the otherhand, is fighting to first defeat Bill McCullom, the states Attorney General. If Dockery is successful in defeating McCullom, and Sink keeps her hold on the Democratic front we will have “GIRL POWER” leading Florida.

I have an affinity for Dockery. I have had  personal encounters with her which have proven to me that she still knows how to come home from Tallahassee and not only listen to her constituents, she helps them. Surely, I will keep my eyes on this election, not just for the historic aspects of it, but because Florida is facing several issues that will directly affect me as a FLORIDA VOTER.
If you live in Florida I encourage you to take a stand on the following issues:

  • Florida speedrail
  • Offshore Drilling  (I’m so against this, I don’t know what to do… future blog)
  • Education Funding
  • Law Enforcement Training (Continuous Training)

AlumniRoundup Report: FAMU tape was a HOAX with paid actors (pornstars)

AlumniRoundup Report: FAMU tape was a HOAX with paid actors (pornstars)

THANK GOODNESS!!  All I could think when I saw the blogs go out yesterday about the so called FAMU tape was, “Isn’t Michael Baisden at FAMU holding a national tour to save our future generations RIGHT NOW!!; why today of all days.”

Twitter, Facebook and numerous other social sites have been spreading this “video”, like wildfire. I tweeted earlier today to my followers to be careful and think twice before forwarding it because for all they know the people featured on the video could be minors and we know what that can lead to… YUP, child pornography charges!

I wish you all could have seen how HOT I was about the foolishness. Not only is it disappointing, it is quite reckless. I’ve been surprised at the people I’ve spoken to who have seen it, but then again… not really!

Let me just say this, as a Double HBCU graduate of two very HISTORICAL BLACK COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES… (Talladega & Texas Southern) and soon to be a triple graduate, DO NOT for one moment and I mean it NOT FOR ONE MOMENT doubt the importance, relevance and necessity of HBCU’s. FAMU is a leading institution of higher learning, and not just amongst HBCU’s.

Now more than ever, HBCU’s need our support. Less than a week ago on February 26th, President Obama signed an EXECUTIVE ORDER to strengthen the White House initiatives with HBCU’s.

There is something special about a classroom in a building that you know was built by former slaves. It creates a pride and determination to succeed.

I am a strong advocate for education in general, but especially higher education. I still remember my4th grade teacher, Ms. Janice Marlow at Rochelle Elementary telling us to always read and learn all we can, because people can’t take away what you learn through education. That has stuck with me over 20 years. When I go out to mentor youth around the country, I always tell them what Ms. Marlow taught me.

Since 1943, the United Negro College Fund, “A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE”  has fought to preserve and protect private HBCU’s. So let’s be reminded of the great UNCF slogan and continue to support and protect our HBCU’s and not be discouraged or defeated by some philandering “Girls Gone Wild” wannabe’s as they make a move on HBCU’s.

So with all that said… PLEASE RETWEET, POST TO YOUR FACEBOOK, EMAIL and TEXT that it was all a SCHEME!! As Steve Harvey & Nephew Tommy say, “RUN TELL DAT!”
