A Father’s JULE… Happy Father’s Day 2012

I AM MY FATHER’S JULi

When I imagine father’s of course I imagine my own. Though he left this earth 14 years ago, he buried so many golden nuggets in the treasure chest of my heart. Funny how you don’t recognize a jewel is a jewel because that’s all you know… that is until the person giving them to you isn’t there anymore and you realize that you are holding jewels just not the bearer of them anymore.

My father gave me so many jewels even while he battled Leukemia in his last days, he still garnered up the energy to give me one last jewel… *yes, insert a face full of tears here*

WHEW… So on this Father’s Day I salute father’s. I love my father so much. If your father is still on this earth, despite your disdain for him, his absence or whatever, don’t let a day come in the future where you live to regret not giving him a chance even if he never gave you one. TOUGH, huh? I know, but I’m so sincere… Don’t hold off ever telling anyone in your life that you love them, because tomorrow is simply “A Pending Transaction.”

Here are 3 very beautiful stories about fathers from 3 friends. A Fathers Day Tribute

About Fathers… I’m Just Saying

I’m Just Saying

If your daddy wasn’t around, or your child’s father isn’t around… Don’t dwell on that. For you have a father who has been with you since day one, even on the day the other guy walked out/away. He’s there daily loving you better than any man could ever love you. If we emulate and focus on his love, perhaps the disdain so many have towards “fathers” would decrease and relationships between father’s and children would increase… It really is easy, we just make it hard. #ijs

The Prelude To Hip Hop… Gil Scott Heron

The Revolution Must Be Mental!

Gil Scott Heron (1949-2011) was an American poet, revolutionary and musician. His album “Pieces of A Man” is a classic work of which everyone of my readers should have the opportunity to experience at least once.

Hearing the news this evening of his demise saddened me for only a moment. I quickly found myself rehearsing the lines to what has become perhaps his most famous piece, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, and I realized my tears had been met with a smile and relief in knowing the power and truthfulness of the poem.  Click here for —> The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Lord, let him love it too!

Last month the big theme for me was LOVE. (it’s a daily theme actually) Nonetheless, I enjoyed sharing and hearing love stories from my subscribers, readers and friends. Now that March is underway, I’m just as excited about Basketball as I was with love last month!!

March Madness… Basketball, Spring and new beginnings! That’s what March means to me. I got to thinking about the two themes for February & March, and so it was only natural that I think of my favorite movie, LOVE & BASKETBALL!

So as I sat here pondering over the lines of this film and my own thoughts of Love & Basketball I decided to write this prayer to God…

THE LOVE & BASKETBALL PRAYER
Lord, let him love you
Lord, let him love to love me
Lord, let him love to watch Love & Basketball with me
Lord, let him love Basketball as much if not more than I do
Lord, let him not love the Lakers but if you insist that he does, at least make him a Tarheel fan like me
Lord, let him love “The Clutch” and recall the 2 three-pointers from 1995
Lord, let him love to go to see the game played live
Lord, let him teach our kids to shoot with both the left & right hands
Lord, let him enjoy high school basketball rivalries, state championships, March Madness and June
Lord, let him know that I’ll love him more than Basketball
Lord, let him know these things and more in Jesus Christ name I pray until next time…

AMEN!

Single Black Women…

Author Corey Barnes recently posed a statement on his Facebook page which inquired about why so many women are single, with African American women leading the way…

“Just looked at some interesting stats online, 40% Asian, 45% White, 51% Latino, and 70% African American women are single in today’s society. So the question today is, why are so many women still single?”

The post garnered over 100 comments and replies. I doubt that the statistics are accurate, however I do agree that there are too many single women.

Single in this context isn’t just as in not married, but this includes not involved in a relationship or merely dating… (many can’t even name the last time they’ve been courted)

After reading Barnes’ post that morning, I pondered over it throughout the day. That evening I responded…click here —> One View of Why Are So Many Black Women Single?

A Radio Love Conflict

5:30 a.m.

Daily my alarm clock blasts the sounds of the local R&B/Soul station here in the heart of Dixie. During the work week the sounds of The Steve Harvey Morning Show dominates the 450 sq. ft I call home.  The soundtrack on my ride into downtown is always The Steve Harvey Morning Show. Most folks know (or think that) Steve Harvey is a new age relationship guru/expert (or at least think that he thinks he is). Nonetheless, his show is filled with conversations about building relationships, recognizing negative relationships and how to overcome them, steps to maintaining relationships and of course marriage. Steve makes everything seem possible when it comes to love if certain basic steps are followed (of course you can get them at a nominal fee if you purchase his book(s)). Nonetheless, Steve is pretty positive about Black love, or love in general.

4:30 p.m.

The soundtrack of my commute from downtown to class is the total opposite to my morning trek. Enter Micheal Baisden. Rarely if ever do or will you hear stories of successful love stories being discussed by Baisden or on his show. There is the regular reference to his co-host George Wilburn and his marriage, but ordinarily that seems to be the extent of it.  I don’t think Baisden is against love or loving, but sometimes I wonder if the brother needs a hug!

Now don’t get me wrong, I realize that life isn’t peaches and cream but I do believe in love and success. I understand the points both brothers are making and that we need variations in conversations, but something about the extreme oppositeness of their tones doesn’t sit quite well with me.

Perhaps the contrast between the love/loving/lovers aspect of these two shows boils down to simply what they think their listeners expect of them. The only problem with that idea though is quite often they share the same exact listeners. *Socialite Shrug*

My question for my reading audience (all 250 of my subscribers) and sporadic readers, LOL…
What implications if any do we face as a community from these radio personalities conversations regarding love in the black community, is it healthy, confusing, irrelevant or all of the above?
