This evening I received a text message of a picture that was forwarded to me and eight other people from a person I haven’t spoken to in nearly a year. The latter part isn’t what bothered me as much as the ignorance of the message attached to the picture.
One of the dumbest text messages ever…
Many have seen this picture, as it has been circulating for weeks. The image is an effigy of President Obama hanging by a noose. STOP PASSING AND POSTING THIS image, just STOP. There is a guy traveling the country in his truck displaying a group of mannequins hanging by nooses including one effigy of President Obama. The image isn’t from Jacksonville, FL, it is from NC. The guy who owns the display has been going around FOR MONTHS with this display. ENOUGH! Stop fueling this mess.
It upsets me because many of these folks who find offensive and ignorant photo’s never seem to forward information of pending legislation which targets voter suppression or how to report voter harassment at the polls. ISSUES THAT MATTER are not the buzz, but a picture which has no power over who we are when we READ & VOTE gets plenty of attention. This is sickening and I am fed up with it. We are 2 days away from election day. I wonder how many of those who circulate this picture have circulated information regarding the pro’s and con’s of amendment issues, the FBI’s election investigation hotline to report voter suppression on election day, the proper ID’s required in their state for voters on Election Day… I wonder.
On Tuesday, be prepared to wait in long lines. Take snacks and water for yourself and perhaps a stranger too. Be patient, be informed. If you experience or see voter suppression at your polling place, REPORT IT! Use this link to find the FBI Field Office in your state nearest to your home in case you see or experience voter suppression. Gather as much information as you can including time, poll location, polling station captain and what was stated/what happened. DO YOUR PART!
